Join us for an exciting and empowering event designed to inspire young readers and future leaders! On Saturday, August 3rd, from 11 AM to 1 PM, Planting People Growing Justice (PPGJ) presents the Leaders are Readers Program at the Rondo Community Library. This free event is the perfect opportunity to introduce your child to the joys of reading while fostering leadership skills that will benefit them for years to come.
The Leaders are Readers program is a unique initiative that seeks to unlock the potential within every child by exposing them to books that inspire, educate, and encourage personal growth. This event features an engaging author read-aloud, interactive activities, and a chance to connect with other families in the community. Through captivating storytelling and fun, hands-on experiences, young readers will not only develop a love for books but also build confidence in themselves as future leaders.
This month’s featured book is Joey and Grandpa Johnson’s Day in Rondo, written by Dr. Artika R. Tyner and illustrated by Broderick Poole. The story follows Joey, a young boy, and his Grandpa as they spend a meaningful day together in the historic Rondo neighborhood. Through this delightful narrative, children will learn about family, community, and the importance of heritage, while also discovering the power of spending quality time with loved ones.
The event will include a live reading of Joey and Grandpa Johnson’s Day in Rondo, followed by a fun-filled discussion and activities related to the themes of the book. This is a great chance to spark a conversation about history, relationships, and leadership with your children. Afterward, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an engaging activity that reinforces the lessons learned during the reading, allowing children to connect even more deeply with the material.
In addition to the storytelling, there will be free lunch and snacks, ensuring that all participants are well-nourished and energized to fully enjoy the event. The program is open to all families, and we encourage you to bring your children of all ages to experience the power of literature and leadership in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Planting People Growing Justice (PPGJ) is a Black woman-owned children’s book publisher and social enterprise that focuses on promoting diversity in literature and empowering youth. Through its carefully selected publications, PPGJ aims to inspire children to see themselves as leaders and changemakers in their communities and the world at large.
The organization’s mission is to publish and promote books that not only reflect the diversity of our society but also help cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and a strong sense of social justice in young readers. By empowering children to read stories that reflect their own experiences while introducing them to diverse perspectives, PPGJ hopes to build a future generation of informed, compassionate, and motivated leaders.
